Diakonie Westmecklenburg‑Schwerin is a large social provider in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern with about 60 sites around Schwerin and nearly 1,000 staff who deliver training, care and support for children, older people and people with disabilities. The group was created in 2021 by merging Stift Bethlehem and Diakoniewerk Neues Ufer. Since 2022 it has pursued a sustainability strategy to weave sustainability into its organisational DNA, and since September 2025 it has been a partner in the project “Diakonie MV – sustainably on the move.”
Next summer semester, a student team which is supported by practice partners from the Diakonie and academic mentors from the University of Rostock will address this topic:

At the Rampe site, administration, a care home, workshops and a canteen are co‑located. Given the site’s diverse waste streams, the goal is to design a simple, unified and inclusion‑friendly waste separation concept.
This concept will be developed and refined within the Summer of Solutions 2026.
