Pilot site 2: Hoffnungstaler Stiftung Lobetal

The first stop on our site visit was Hoffnungstaler Stiftung Lobetal. Surrounded by residential buildings, the pilot site is located in the centre of the premises and is used primarily as an event space for festivities and celebrations. In the future, there should still be room for a stage, buffet, stalls and seating, so that Easter, summer, harvest festival and winter celebrations can continue to take place here.

At the same time, there is a desire to transform the site into a new central place for recreation and social interaction for all residents of the premises. This requires a redesign. The lawn area, which is currently exposed to the elements, needs to become more climate-resilient. For example, climate-adapted planting could reduce temperatures on the site and create attractive shaded areas for residents.

In addition to planting, issues such as water management, the spatial structure of the site and biodiversity will also be considered in the redesign planning.

Pilot site 1: Wohnungsgesellschaft Erkner

The second stop was the pilot site of Wohnungsgesellschaft Erkner: a car park for local residents in the centre of Erkner. Here too, the function of the site must be maintained while addressing challenges such as heat accumulation, drought and heavy rainfall.

A car park is subject to a wide range of regulations and standards that must be observed during redesign. These aspects are being addressed in close coordination with the knowledgeable partners from the City of Erkner and Wohnungsgesellschaft Erkner. Nevertheless, all participants agree that various nature-based measures, such as tree planting and redirecting water flows, can also be implemented here to support climate adaptation.

Two working groups are currently active as part of the UCR Trialogue.

Working Group 1, “Urban Climate Maps”, is developing an approach for collecting and assessing climate data and is preparing climate maps for the cities of Erkner and Zielona Góra.

Working Group 2, “Solution Catalogue”, is developing a catalogue of solutions for redesigning the four pilot sites in Erkner and Zielona Góra.

Using Spatial Data to Plan Climate Adaptation in Cities

Climate change in urban areas is particularly evident in more frequent heatwaves and heavy rainfall events, which can cause local flooding. To plan climate-mitigation and climate-adaptation measures effectively, municipalities need to base planning decisions on integrated, measurable data.
